Empirical Study: Model for adaptation of consumer electronics in Developing countries like India.

We would like to come up with a model that can be used to predict how the Indian consumer will react to the new trends in consumer electronics. This will be achieved by studying and analysing the past trends that have occurred in the electronics space. For example – analysing demand and adaptation of Smartphones and Tablets in India and using the same trend patterns to analyse the demand for the next big thing in consumer electronics space – Wearable Electronics (smart watches, smart bands, smart rings and smart goggles).

If we consider the case of tablets, they were at first resisted in India – The demand was slow to pick up, even though tablets were in great demand in the rest of the world – especially the developed countries. But after a period of time, the demand picked up and now India is amongst the top countries which are fuelling demand for tablets. Same was the case for Smart Phones – In fact India is supposed to become the 2nd largest market for Smart Phones after China in a couple of years (by 2017).

Below is a trend analysis of the smart devices in India:

The use of this model will be to estimate demand growth for electronics in developing countries. We would also like to (hopefully) expand this model so that any new trend in electronics can be accounted for.

Other than using the past trends, we would take into account the utility of the product along with the pay ability of the target consumers.
