In Lecture, I got the opportunity to hear the engineering and technology adventures of Dean Johnson and learn more about his professional and academic paths. I think that hearing his story made me love engineering more.

At the beginning of the lecture Dean Johnson ask students some question which all Engineering students should have the answers. Then he talked about his self- Assessment at start of his engineering adventure and his first big decision, which was choosing school. He said he went to University of California Davis. And at firs he had conceptual, team work and problem solving skill but didn’t have good mathematics and communication skills. He didn’t start university as an engineering but he was attracted to engineering as it has low risk, no need to wear tie, different flavor, challenge and obvious connections. Starting from his second year he participated in different projects like in nuclear lab which, produce radio isotopes for medical imaging and he said these participations helped him in a good way. Then the time for his second big decision came, after graduation to go to graduate school or get a job and he decided to go to graduate school at Princeton University and studied Granular flows. After he was done with graduate school he started working as an environmental engineer for shell in order to clean toxic contaminated place. Beside his carrier he said that he have many patents that he don’t make me of them. After that as shell was to transfer him to administrative staff that he don’t like he joined ASU. After he joined ASU he participated in many useful projects that have good impact on the society. He said he become professor, Dean of Ira Fulton School of engineering starting from an Associate professor.

The important messages I got from the lecture are that our major influence our thinking and that we don’t have to let that define our carrier goal, to expect skill change, to build opportunities which help to work on team, and to...
