Installing Windows Server Networking - Option 1

In Windows Server 2008 server roles are used to control a server’s environment. A server role is a set of software programs that, when they are installed and properly configured, lets a computer perform a specific function for multiple users or other computers within a network (Roles, Role Services, and Features, 2014). Roles are given to a computer to perform certain functions and as many functions as the administrator allows. Roles are also used to provide users access to other resources such as printers and files that are maintained or attached to other computers in the network. Some of the main roles that are available are Active Directory Services, File Services, Print and Document Services, Sharepoint Services, and Application Server.

Active Directory Services is the core of the Server control. Active Directory Services are further broken down into different roles such as Certificate Services, Domain Services, Federation Services, and Rights Management Services. These are all different areas accessed by the administrator to enable the efficient management of network resources.

• Active Directory Certificate Services – Used to create and manage public key certificates.

• Active Directory Domain Services – Securely manages and stores critical user information as well as computers and other devices on the network.

• Active Directory Federation Services – Securely shares user identities and access rights to authenticate single-sign-on for multiple Web applications.

• Active Directory Rights Management Services – This service helps safeguard the digital information from unauthorized use by using encryption.

These Active Directory roles services are essential in Server administration operating efficiently and effectively.
