CASE STUDY ON HAITI

In October 2010 grounds in Haiti were flooded due to a number of reasons and with it was a lot of effects.

Causes of flooding in Haiti:

1. Hurricanes – TOMAS

2. Land slippages – DEFORESTATION

3. Poor management of land – IRRIGATION

Hurricane Tomas had a massive effect on the country as Haiti's crowded earthquake survivors' camps and swamped coastal towns were flooded. In the capital Port-au-Prince, still scarred from a devastating January 12 earthquake, hundreds of thousands of homeless quake survivors huddled under rain-drenched tents and tarpaulin shelters in muddy encampments.

SOCIAL IMPACT OF FLOODING IN HAITI

* Damage to and destruction of buildings

* Damage to local infrastructure i.e. road

* Disruption to local services (transportation, drinking water, wastewater disposal, power and emergency services)

* Death of citizens due to being trapped in homes and mudslides and also due to disease (cholera outbreak)

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF FLOODING IN HAITI

* Revenue loss

* Tourism loss

* Job loss

* Loss of property and investments

* Increase expenses

This 2010 flooding has had a dramatic and devastating effect on Haiti. Since then, incentives has been put in place to renew and rebuild Haiti as a nation so that it can stand on its own again. The government of Haiti, along with many foreign volunteer groups and associations such as the UN has brought about these incentives as to rebuild Haiti:

* Re-construction of roads, schools, churches, hospitals, fire stations, police stations and even churches.

* Proper management of drainage facilities

* Relocation of displaced citizens from flood prone areas and providing them with shelter.

* Providing emergency relief

* Providing drinkable water

* Educating the public about proper disposal of garbage and the importance of replanting trees to avoid land slippages
