Security system is a major concern for vehicles, homes, and businesses. Now in the twentieth century computers are starting to become part of that list. Computer systems today are more venerable to malicious software attacks then a couple years ago, and the attacks are getting worse as time goes on. Having malicious software on a system can in many cases lead to personal or confidential information stolen and the user would not be aware of it. Same thing could happen in a business that would lead to lost time and productivity, and in some cases legal actions filed against the business for allowing information to be stolen.

When it comes to operating systems there are four operating systems to choose from. There is UNIX/Linux, Macintosh Apple (Mac) and Microsoft Windows (Windows). UNIX is a one that is used for commercial OS, its counterpart Linux is derived from UNIX. UNIX allows for open software programming and is used in many large corporations and businesses. Mac OS X is also derived from UNIX desktop OS; they are competing in today’s computer world. UNIX/Linux has many security standards that are similar to Mac OS X, the Data Encryption Standard (DES) have been used since the seventies and are standard in today’s techno world. The DES allows UNIX/Linux to have encryption of passwords with a complex algorithm using a key.

The contrast in Mac OS X and UNIX/Linux is that UNIX/Linux allows each user their own distinctive password that is based on a set of numeric and alpha characters. Once they login they can create a new password of their own to replace the one given by the system administrator. With Mac the user can create their own passwords and logins without the help from a system administrator. One more difference between UNIX/Linux and Mac OS X in security design is Mac OS X is much easier and simpler to control then UNIX/Linux.

To compare UNIX/Linux and Mac OS X in strengths for security is they both have a long history of outstanding protection...
