Bringing Sports Overseas

There are many cultural factors that U.S. sport team franchises must overcome to increase popularity overseas. Although the American culture primarily focuses on cuisine, religion, and festivals, sports are still a huge part of the average Americans everyday life. Sports are a big part of the American culture. With football being one of our biggest sports past times, it would interesting to see other countries adopt the game and witness a football world championship. Our biggest sport past times are football, basketball and baseball. Football is very unique to America but isn’t so popular overseas. Although football is similar to rugby, which is admired in other countries, the American version of football has been frowned upon because it shares the name of one of the most popular sports worldwide, soccer. Because of this many countries resent football and deem the sport unworthy of its name.

One cultural factor U.S. sport franchises must overcome is cultural differences. Meaning what we like in America may not translate in other countries. In America, soccer isn’t a very popular sport, which makes it obvious that different cultures value different concepts. we soccer isn’t that big of a sport, but in most other countries it’s the biggest sport. If America wants to encourage countries to support our well respected sport, I believe that changing the name would be a great place to start. Although other countries already have a version of football, it becomes rather confusing because they play with different rules and guidelines. Having two football sports would be very confusing. Changing the international name for the sport would increase its popularity. If Americans are seriously considering introducing our favorite sports, we must first understand culture, customs, values, and attitude of the other countries.
