Freedom of the press

It reveals injustice and oppression,it changes governments,it spreads knowledge,it is a priceless heritage to keep and defend if it existed,and it is the most important right to be demanded if it didn’t exist,it’s a sacred right that should be promoted.It is “Freedom of the press”;so great is its influence that some have called it the Fourth Estate;Dickens has called the press “the mighty engine”;the press in all its forms such as newspapers ,television, radio etc .. wields immense power in a democratic society.As Napoleon used to say “your hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets.A free press tells people what the government is up to and keeps monitoring it,it keeps the society informed about all the news and problems so it can resolve them and it let you express your mind and ideas with no fear.

To start,a free press helps people monitor the government and the political process to ensure that the democratic process isn’t abused .A free press is one of the most important players in a country,it is the fourth estate;”Edmond burke” said in a parliamentary debate in 1787 on press that there were three estates in parliament,but in the reporter’s gallery yonder there sat a fourth estate more important far than they all.A free press is the first sign of democracy in a state,free and easy access to imformation is essential to the health of democracy : first it ensures that citizens make responsible informed choices rather than acting out of ignorance or misinformation;second information serves “a checking function” by ensuring that elected representatives uphold their oaths of office and carry out wishes of those who elected them,actually the press has a big influence on politics ,public’s point of view is changed by the way news is reported thus affecting voting polls.The most powerful autocrat is forced to take note of public opinion reflected in a free press.In fact we all know about the arab spring that began on 18...
