PART I: CURRENT EVENT ANALYSIS

Ethics are very important, or should be important to all business people. Yet many neglect ethics as an important concept that has a major impact upon their success. Consider discrimination for instance; even in recent years, Americans still face age, racial, and gender discrimination. All are important subjects but for this paper we will be focusing on gender, and maybe a little racial discrimination – both in the workplace. It is interesting to note that to this day, women are consistently compensated less than men who fill similar positions and this salary disparity can primarily be blamed on gender discrimination. In fact, a recent article by Finnegan and Welsh (2013), points out "the continuing, costly legacy of race and sex discrimination in a uniformed force that remains overwhelmingly and predominantly white," Another research by Wallace (2014), also point out that, “As recent as 2013, the typical woman working full time, year-round in the United States earned 78 percent of men’s earnings.” Add the race lens to the equation and it becomes apparent that the pay gap is even worse for many women of color.

Now, with all these facts at hand, how do women in our society today respond when affected by the issue of gender inequality? The stakeholder management approach as described by Weiss (2009), offers “a good way of understanding the ethical effects of environmental forces and groups on specific issues that affect real time stakeholders.,” (p. 7). The approach begins to address questions by enabling individuals and groups to come up with win-win strategies based on identifying and prioritizing issues, threats and opportunities.
