Social Networking Sites Cannot Be Blamed for Bullying

1. What were the actions taken by the person you chose?

The person I chose in this article was David Heisey, Principle of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. He made the statement “Facebook was the only common denominator” when discussing the bullying incidents and a cafeteria fight that apparently got started from a post on a child’s “wall.” He went on to say the statements made on the post initiated the words exchanged in the cafeteria, which in turn, started the fight.

2. What was the impact of those actions?

The actions really did not make any kind of impact other than putting the blame on social media and casting the true reason for the problems off on something else. This gives parents the wrong idea as to what is the true cause of the problem.

3. If you had held the same position, what action would you have taken?

If I had held the same position, I would have put time into investigating everything that had happened and not just jumped the gun and said “social media was the root of all evil in this case” and left it at that. I would have questioned the parties involved and found out where the problem had started and why it had been broadcast, no matter how it was, and why?

4. How did your moral reasoning impact your decision?

I know that kids will be kids because I was once one myself. I know that kids can be very cruel and ignore the consequences of what their cruelty can cause. I think we are morally responsible for seeking out the truth of things instead of jumping to conclusions and saying social media was to blame for the way our children are behaving. I think we as parents, should take responsibility for the way our children act. We should make it clear to them the right way to act or the consequences that come into play if they do not.
