Describe the procedure for the immediate management of a sprained ankle(5 marks)

1. An ankle sprain is a very common injury occurring in most sports, it is when the sole of the foot roles in an awkward position thus injuring the structure of the ankle mainly comprising of ligaments. The best possible procedure for most injuries is known as the ricer acronym (rest, ice, compression, elevation and referral). Within the first 15 minutes of occurrence ice is necessary to stop the swelling of inflamed area, ice for 20 minutes at first. Then beginning at R for rest, rest is vital for repair and preventing further damage, you must be in a comfortable position. The next step is I for ice, you must continue icing injured area 20 minutes every hour for the next 48 hours, make sure ice is covered in cloth to prevent ice burn from extreme temperature, Then C representing compression, this is where you bandage the in injured area to decrease swelling, bleeding and inflammation (elastic bandage only and do not put ice on while bandage is). Elevation (e) is key in also decreasing bleeding and inflammation; you must raise the injured area high above heat at around a 45 degree angle. Finally seek referral (r) in the form of physio or local gp if injury is worsening even after this management procedure.

Although due to the delicacy of a pregnant women’s body and mental strength they will be limited to the sports they can participate in because of the contact and conditions for example soccer or netball but this doesn’t mean they cannot participate in sport at all. Women that are pregnant may perceive in their minds that they are in no shape to participate or may be worried of dangers towards the child, so the impact pregnancy has on female athletes is a closed off or cautious mindset but this is quite the opposite...
