Leadership is crucial in implementing decisions successfully. Leaders will influence the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours of others. Leaders set a direction, they help to see what lies ahead; they help to visualize what others might achieve; they encourage and inspire team members. Kriger, M. (2010) without leadership a group of human beings quickly degenerates into argument and conflict. Leadership helps to point us in the same direction and harness the efforts jointly. Leadership is the ability to get other people to do something significant that they might not otherwise do. It’s energizing people toward a goal.

Leaders must not only be able to define departmental, unit or organizational missions, but they must also be able to coordinate the activities of others and motivate them to meet mission requirements. Selection and implementation of actions to bring about goal attainment represents a form of problem solving which makes the generation, evaluation, and implementation of proactive and reactive solutions key to leader effectiveness

Today’s intensive, dynamic markets feature innovation-based competition, price/performance rivalry, decreasing returns, and the creative destruction of existing competencies. Effective leadership behaviours can facilitate the improvement of performance when organizations face these new challenges Effective leadership is seen as a potent source of management development and sustained competitive advantage for organizational performance improvement.
