Abstract

This paper looks into whether Singaporeans would choose to pay more for their airfares just for service. Secondary research has been done online via the Internet and offline, through hardcopies of publications. To facilitate understanding of the research topic, the effects that the emergence of low-cost carriers (LCCs) have on full-service carriers have also been looked into. As the research topic looks at the willingness to pay more just for service, Singapore Airlines (SIA), which is reputably known to provide the excellent service, is being discussed.

In this research paper, it has been found that among the many factors that passengers look at when choosing an airline to fly with, service is not of utmost importance to them, it is price that is of utmost importance. Hence, when Singaporeans choose to pay more for their airfare, they choose to pay it for comfort, which includes things like comfortable seats and nice cabin ambience, and convenience, such as scheduling and punctuality of flights. Adding on, several factors that would affect the willingness of Singaporeans to pay more just for service has also been identified, they are namely, economic uncertainty, high jet fuel prices, breakout of pandemic flu and political unrest.

In conclusion, Singaporeans would not choose to pay more for their airfares just for service. The continuous efforts that SIA takes to upgrade and improve the skills of its staff members and reinvent products and improve its current products to provide only the best for its passengers is key to the survival of this full-service airline of Singapore. This is also the reason why Singaporeans would pay more to fly onboard an SIA flight.
