In the past few decades, cloning has been portrayed as a fictitious idea only seen in sci-fi books and movies. Now this fiction has become a reality wear already a sheep has been cloned. In Jeremy Riftin’s article “Why I Oppose Human Cloning” Riftin states that there should be a complete ban on human cloning and stem cell research. In my opinion I believe there should be a complete ban on cloning and stem cell research.

First I believe there should be a complete ban on cloning for many reasons. The main reason why I believe cloning should be banned in general is because it is playing God. Human beings should not be able to create life because that’s God’s job. Also with the power to create life there is always the risk of eugenics. Eugenics is the removal of bad traits to create a more “perfect” gene pool. Eugenics was scene in history when Hitler tried to create an Aryan race and would kill non-Aryan to achieve his goal. In this case with the power to remove bad genetic traits in a clone, a person can essentially create a “perfect” person. In the article Riftin explained that a lot of the things that make us all unique would be removed in a clone almost making them more like robots than human beings. Also with cloning, the person making the clone can determine the gender of the clone. If cloning was legal there would most likely be an imbalance of males and females because people would be playing God and choosing the gender of the person. Another reason that cloning should be outlawed is because the human rights of cloned individuals would most likely be violated. Cloned individuals could be treated like sub-humans because there is the argument that they are not real people but merely copies. Also how would a clone of person react to the fact he isn’t an actual person but just an exact copy of a person. While the costs greatly outweigh the benefits there are still benefits to cloning. For a couple struggling with infertility cloning might be a good idea...
