The Fence: A Necessary Security Measure

Built in 2006 (Wikipedia), the Fence between the U.S and Mexico has raised many debates on whether it is necessary or xenophobic. In reality, the fence has greatly decreased illegal traffic, and the effectiveness of border control points has tremendously risen from 69.11% in 2006-the year the fence was built-to 83.98% in 2011 (Graham). Building a fence between the United States and Mexico is important for a better control of the border in order to fight plights such as drug smuggling and criminality.

The wall is an imposing and indispensable physical obstacle at the border that strengthens security measures. Indeed, the fence makes it harder to cross the Southwest border, which challenges traffickers when trying to pass narcotics through the border’s wall. An article from CBS News relates to us that smugglers who tried to pass drugs over the 14-foot border had to abandon their plans because their SUV was stuck (CBS News). The smugglers were trying to introduce contraband into the United States by building ramps on which the car was supposed to pass over the wall (CBS News). Even though these violators found a very imaginative way to pass drugs, they could not succeed because of the fence.

Without a physical barrier it would be impossible to completely protect the border against external threats. The wall is necessary because a border with just guards and equipment is not secure enough. Colin Hanna, leader of Let Freedom Ring, a public policy non-profit organization, affirms that technology and manpower alone are not sufficient to control the border and that a physical fence is necessary to completely secure the frontier with Mexico. Hanna reports that even with efficient technology and border agents, the border would not be secure without a fence. Otherwise, more than 100, 000 Border Patrol officers would be needed, which is impossible both financially and administratively (Hanna).
