Diffusion and Osmosis Lab Part 2

Question: What direction will water move when sucrose, glucose, salt and albumin solutions are mixed with each other?

Hypothesis: I predict that the cell containing water will lose weight in every solution but in water, then it will remain the same. The cell containing sucrose will lose weight only out in salt, but in the other two solutions the cell will gain weight. The cell containing NaCl (salt) will gain weight when put into the glucose and albumin solutions, but remain the same when put into the salt solution. The cell containing glucose that was put into albumin will lose weight.

Results & Calculations (from class):

In Bag In Beaker % Change Drawing

Water Water .27

Water Sucrose -61.97

Water Salt -27.33

Water Glucose -31.7

Water Albumin -55.8

Sucrose Salt 5.11

Sucrose Glucose 19

Sucrose Albumin 22.79

Salt Salt 7

Salt Glucose -78.28

Salt Albumin -26.8

Glucose Albumin 9

Conclusion: My hypothesis was mostly incorrect. I was correct that water would lose weight in every solution but water. The cell made from water was put into the beaker filled with water it changed .27% meaning it gained weight rather than staying the same a I predicted. I was also incorrect about my sucrose prediction because I thought that the cell will lose weight when put into the beaker containing salt but instead it had a 5.11% increase and gained weight. But I was correct about the other two predictions because the cell did gain weight in both of the other solutions. I was incorrect with all my predictions of the cells containing salt. When the cell containing salt was put into a beaker contain salt it changed 7% meaning that the cell gained weight, and didn’t remain the same as I predicted. Also when the cell containing salt was put into glucose it had a -78.28% decrease, and when it was put into the albumin it had -26.% decrease meaning that the cell lost weight in both solutions rather than gain...
