Chapter 10 Questions 1,2,5,6

1. Consider the reasons implementations fail. For at least three of these reasons, explain why this happens, if there is one (or more) type of implementation likely to minimize the occurrence, and if there is one (or more) type of installation more likely to induce failure for this reason.

Risk: it is a sure failure if the user has no involvement in the development process. In this case, the Phased installation is a better option so the user can gradually learn the new system in installments; an implementation method that will bring about a sure system failure for this reason would be a direct installation.

Commitment to the Project: If the development process isn’t managed, than the new system can be a failure. But if the project is managed properly, than a parallel installation is a good choice, however the direct implementation wouldn’t be a good choice because if the system does fail, it might be too difficult to return to the old system.

Realistic user expectations: failure comes from users closed mindedness about what the new system will able do. Perhaps a good choice would be a Single location installation which allows users to view prior success about the system…….encouraging positive expectations about the implementation. However, Installation methods that might encourage an implementation failure for this reason would be Phased installation (due to confusion and constant conversion), and the Parallel installation method because of delayed benefits and confusion to users.

2. Members of your project development team are disagreeing about the relative importance of training and documentation. Sam strongly believes that training is far more important because it will ensure the successful implementation of the information system and that the early usage is a positive experience. Pat encounters that the user documentation is far more important because its impact can help not only the current users, but also...
