Analytics in the HR at Sears Case Study Report

Sears Holdings Corporation is a leading integrated retailer focused on seamlessly connecting the digital and physical shopping experiences to serve our members - wherever, whenever and however they want to shop. (Sears, n.d., Para. 1) Three years ago, an HR analytics team for SHC was built to help close a gap in the services the HR team was providing.

Identifying the Problem

The problem found in this case, was that HR department and the finance department at SHC were not agreeing on certain things, and this was causing problems within the company. “At the time, metrics from HR and Finance did not agree on basic things such as headcount or payroll.” (Schleyer, 2013, Pg. 233) These two departments of SHC not agreeing in these areas of business can very detrimental to any company and is an urgent issue that should be dealt with immediately. If a company allows a problem like this to exist in their business it will show in other areas and will start to negatively impact the entire organization. Fortunately, SHC put a plan into action to correct this problem, and this plan started by building an HR analytics team within the HR function.

The HR analytics team that was put together has many capabilities and includes building actionable HR scorecards, building strategic HR dashboards, validating assessments and uncovering learning, strengthening the performance management system, and displaying natural career paths. (Schleyer, 2013, Pg. 234) “Our work also includes people-related questions around staffing, scheduling, physical work environment, and department configurations.
