Integrative Intercultural Communication Paper

As a Student Services or Financial Aid administrator is important to acquire the ability to work with many different cultures in the Educational environment. Students come to colleges and universities to ask for assistance in their educational goals. But not every student has the same needs. Communication is key to having a successful relationship with students and their families. This paper will discuss the effective strategy for intercultural communication in Higher Education.

If you take a walk on a campus you will see the many faces and cultures that make the colleges and universities population. In higher education the minority enrollment has continually increased annually. As administrators it is important to understand the type of students that come in to seek help on education and career choices. “Culture is a learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, norms, and social practices, which affect the behaviors of a relatively large group of people” (Lustig & Koester, 2010). In a daily basis there are face to face interactions within the campus with different people from different cultures. College and universities have rules and regulations that are in place that are set by the federal government, state and institution. This rules and regulations must be communicated to potential and current students. But how do we communicate this set of rules and regulations that would apply to each student with different backgrounds. The delivery of this information to the student must be consider and communicated in a way that reaches every person in the school. For example a financial aid administrator may provide an American national student with all the information and details about their financial aid, including student loans and its interest.
