The Legalization of Medical Marijuana

I. “Despite the fact that marijuana remains a controlled substance that is illegal in the United States under federal law, 16 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana,” according to Dinah Miller in an article entitled, “Medical Marijuana Laws Make a Farce of Medicine” dated March 07, 2012 on the Cannabisnews website.

A. Good morning, Dr. Anderson and fellow classmates, my name is Aquilla Williams and today I will persuade you to vote for the legalization of marijuana for medical use in the state of Virginia.

B. The legalization of marijuana interested me because I have an aunt who is dying from cancer and not only is she an advocate for the legalization, she always state that her days are far more enjoyable because she has marijuana to assist with the chronic pain and nausea.

C. This topic is significant because chronic-disease attacks young and old, family and friends, and because our love ones are important, we are all affected.

D. Marijuana should be legal for medical use because if regulated and controlled it is beneficial to people experiencing the side effects of cancer and AIDS medication, assist chronically-ill patients with pain, and treat diseases such as multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

II. “It is truly ridiculous that Marijuana should be illegal in a nation where tobacco kills thousands per year, alcohol causes a majority of fatal car accidents, and most important FDA-approved prescription fatality is on the rise”, according to Alan W. Bock, in his book entitled, Waiting to Inhale: The Politics of Medical Marijuana.

A. The most common policy question regarding medical marijuana use is how we can regulate it and tax it.

B. Secondly, medical marijuana dispensaries and cafes are usually only permitted to operate outside of commercial zones, which make it hard for ill patients to get to.
