REPORT ON AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF STARTING UP A CHILDCARE FACILITY FOR THE THAMBO GENERAL HOSPITAL STAFF MEMBERS.

1. Terms of reference

On the 23 March 2015, Mr B Shabangu: Operations Manager, requested an investigation into the possibility of starting up a childcare facility for the children of the staff members of Thambo General Hospital. A recommendation to be submitted to the Chairperson of Council on 22 May 2015.

2. Procedures

Procedures followed in order to obtain the information contained in this report

include:

2.1 Staff members were interviewed regarding the effects and disruptions of work flow caused during the school holidays where employees’ children accompanying their parents to the hospital are spending the day in the grounds and playing ball games on the grass at the hospital entrance.

2.2 A questionnaire on starting up a childcare facility for the children of the staff members was sent out to 100 people.

2.3 A list of everything needed to start up a childcare facility was obtained including cost estimates.

2.4 Meetings were held with staff to find out the type of service including how many nannies are needed and games they would like the children to play should a childcare be opened.

3. Findings

Based on the procedures listed above the following was found:

3.1 There are 55 parents with 75 affected children without supervision available for them.

3.2 During the month of schools holidays there are nearly 25 cases of absenteeism reported every week.

3.3 On the 75 children affected, there are 5 babies between the ages of 1 and 3, and there are 30 children between the ages of 3 and 7, then there are 40 children between the ages of 7 and 9 years old.

3.4 Of the 55 parents affected, 53 of them are willing to have a certain amount deducted from their salaries on a monthly basis for the use of the childcare facility.
