Our dearest Oliver and Sullivan,

As you know, your mommy and I will be leaving soon to embark on our 10 year voyage for our rite of passage into our mid-adulthood. We hate to miss out on all the great things you two will do while we’re gone, but we’re excited we get to experience this, too. We’re able to write, so please write as often as you can. We’ll mail you your first care packages when we get to where we’re going so you’ll have our address.

Much like we have no choice on when and where this journey will take us, you both too will begin your own rite of passage of sorts while we’re away. While ours will likely change our mentality, yours will change your bodies from the inside out. A lot is going on in there already and you don’t even realize it! This change is called ‘puberty’ and it helps to transform you into the wonderful adults you’re going to be when we return. Puberty is different for boys and girls, but we feel it’s important you both understand what’s going on to the other because you’re going to need people you trust during this time.

Ladies are always first- remember that, Oliver! All jokes aside, girls tend to show signs of physical change during puberty first. This is due to a hormone called estrogen being pumped throughout your body. You’ll start to notice, Sullivan, you’ll grow taller than Oliver for a while, and then you’ll start to grow breasts. The best person to go bra shopping with is your Godmother Dee- she loves that stuff. You will also start to grow hair in places you never had it before, like under your arms and around your genitals. The hair on your legs will start to get thicker, too. We are 100% okay with you shaving all of it, if that’s what you want, but please be careful! Cuts from shaving are not fun at all. When it comes to shaving, talk to your cousin, Brittany. Mommy says they learned all about how to shave and where together.
