Marijuana is not a safe or healthy drug, especially for long term users. People who chronically use marijuana are subject to drug dependence and addiction. Consuming this drug for prolonged periods of times can also result in respiratory illnesses and cognitive impairments. The Office of National Drug Control Policy also stated that when seeking treatment, marijuana is the second most common substance abused by addicts.

As stated by the federal law, marijuana is considered a Schedule I substance according to the Controlled Substance Act. A Schedule I substance is one that has a great possibility for addiction, and has not been approved for medical use. This law has recently changed so that states may allow the medical use of marijuana without being prosecuted. In summary, it is unconstitutional to consume any amount of marijuana for any duration of time in any state, other than those who allow the medical use.

However, states such as Washington and Colorado have recently passed laws legalizing marijuana with some restrictions. According to RCW 69.50, the Revised Code of Washington, includes the definitions and terms for all controlled substances including marijuana. The states intentions are specified in “Initiative Measure No. 502” found on the National Conference of State Legislature’s website. Washington had many reasons for amendment. The following are the top three reasons: it allows local and state law enforcement to turn their attention to the violent crimes being committed as well as any property crimes, this could generate new tax revenue that could be used in various ways, such as education, health care, research, and substance abuse prevention, and finally, it would eliminate illegal drug organizations from selling and distributing the substance.
