“Technology and how it has changed Society”

There have been many advancements in technology that have made significant impact on society and the way things are done. Less than forty years ago, the world had a very idealistic view of technical advancements. This is because for years, only scientist and scholars were aware of or even interested in technology or in what direction it was going. The general public had a very limited idea of what was in store technically. Most of our ideas about technology and its effects were influence by science fiction movies and television programs. In fact the very word technology had this far off, ambiguous, uncertain, methodical aura to it. Since then the magnitude and speed of technological advancement has been staggering, forever changing the way we communicate and socialize.

Let’s take a look at how technical advances have affected three major areas of our modern existence: the telephone, the post office, and the newspaper. Let’s consider and reflect on how we communicated with one another forty years ago. Most American households had one rotary dial telephone that was centrally located on the wall in the kitchen, with no caller ID, no call waiting and if someone called and the line was in use they would just have to call back later. After a seemingly short forty years of technical innovation and the creation of the internet, almost every adult in the modern world has a cell/smart phone. The smart phones go way beyond just phone calls. They are capable of texting, taking and sending photos via messaging. You can watch videos and even read books. And the most important capability of all, the Internet can be accessed. The telephone advancements have caused a breech in the way we communicate.
