The Pharmacy Practice Portfolio

* You may be wondering what a portfolio is?

* You may have heard from the students in other years how hard they worked to produce their portfolios and you may be approaching the subject with a certain amount of dread?

However:

* You may also have heard that students found that putting together their portfolio was useful, fun and helped them to consolidate their learning.

* You may have heard that some students gained high marks towards their module – this was because they produced excellent portfolios which will support them in the course and into their pre-registration year.

What is it all about?

At the end of the first year of study in Pharmacy Practice 1 our students should be able to :

1. discuss and appreciate the roles and responsibilities of the Pharmacist .

2. describe the pharmacy law and ethics applied to the safe and effective sale and supply of medicines.

3. describe approaches adopted in the recognition and treatment of some minor ailments.

4. demonstrate competence in the dispensing process; taking into account the law and systems for safe practice e.g. SOPs .

5. apply and demonstrate good communication skills in relation to the supply of medicines.

6. establish rapport with patients and professional and interact as part of a team within a practice based setting.

7. write a report with reflection in the provision of a portfolio.

These are the ‘learning outcomes’ of the module SFP1001 and we use the portfolio as one of the ways we assess whether and how you have developed and met these outcomes by the end of the taught part of the year, the other ways are by the dispensing exam , calculation test and written exam. This practice of using a portfolio is increasingly common in professional assessment and is a skill necessary for CPD in pharmacy.
