“The Great Debaters” Character Analysis
Samantha Booke:
Samantha Booke was a dynamic character in the nonprint text due to the noticeable change in her after
Wiley College’s victory against Oklahoma City College. Their victory caused her to become confident in
herself and the words she said as well as explore her feelings for Henry Lowe.
Throughout the nonprint text, it was revealed to the audience that Samantha Booke was a determined,
intelligent, and highly motivated young lady. She was determined to make the debate team and become
the first female debater for Wiley College. She showed her high level of intellect when she began
debating Professor Tolson at the debate team tryouts and afterwards revealed to Henry Lowe that she
wanted to become a lawyer and being on the debate team would be good practice for her.
Professor Tolson:
Professor Tolson was proven to be a static character when he refused to back down from trying to create
a union made up of black and white sharecroppers. Even after one of his meetings was ambushed and
attacked, he still refused to back down.
In the nonprint text, Professor Tolson was a courageous, stubborn, and wise man. Even after being
attacked, threatened, and eventually arrested, Professor Tolson refused to let those things deter him from
his goal. His wisdom was shown multiple times within the nonprint text. (i.e. when he told James
Farmer Jr. that those people would not listen to him if he were to be in a tuxedo) The motives of
Professor Tolson was to create a sharecropping union that consisted of blacks and whites.
Henry Lowe:
Henry Lowe was a dynamic character due to the change in his maturity levels. In the beginning of the
