From reading the text, a sexual script are expectations of how to behave sexually as a male or female, and as a heterosexual, bisexual, lesbian, or gay male. This sexual script is a guideline that helps us form our roles and interpret our emotions. Our script begins to form at a very early age by observing our parents and the people around us and is modified as we become older. As we develop our sexual script it defines who we are and provides a foundation for improving our relationships.

Our parents are our first influence in getting to know our sexuality whether they want to be or not. Children are often taught from their parents not to touch their private parts or touch anyone else’s private parts which expresses a meaning of sex to a child. Researchers have also observed that parents who acknowledge sexuality instead of condemning it help their children develop a positive body image and higher self-esteem. Along with parental influence there is also sibling, peer, and media influences. Older siblings are often looked at as role models by their younger siblings. It is also easier for a younger sibling to go to their older sibling instead of a parent for sexual advice because they feel less embarrassed.

As we get older we conform into our sexual script, either a gender based traditional script or a more contemporary one. Traditional male sexual scripts expect men to be initiators of sex, be confident, assertive, and know how to please their partner. Their goal is to achieve sex and be dominant. For a female, the traditional script entails a more passive role. They associate sex with love and not lust, they are to wait until a male initiates a sexual activity, and they typically do not talk about their sexual feelings.
