The Comparison of Matching Between Leadership and Followership

Referring to communication style, we can divide it into two parts, leadership communication styles and followership communication styles. Leadership communication styles can be categorized to three styles authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire. Different styles have different function, characteristics and actions. As well as followership communication styles, it has five kinds of follower communication styles, Participants, Activists, Diehards, Isolates and Bystanders which need different needs. Followers, like leaders, need to understand their communication styles to carry out their roles successfully. The communication style a leader selects contributes to the success or failure of work influence, to be effective, leaders must tailor their communication styles to the needs of their followers. Because of that, those followers will be more open to personal performance feedback and rewards. Below we analyze how Authoritarian and Laissez-Faire leadership style works with both Isolates and Activists.

Analysis of Authoritarian Leadership Style

The authoritarian leaders prefer to use directly regulating criterion to control their followers strictly. Also authoritarian leaders hold the power to make any decisions by themselves without communicating with their followers, which lay a gap between themselves and their followers in order to emphasizing their particularity. Many authoritarian leaders believe that followers would not be functional effective without direct monitoring（Hackman & Johnson, 2013）.Below we will analyze how Authoritarian leadership works with both Activists and Isolates.
