The Culture of the Walt Disney Company

In the year 1923, Walt and Roy Disney began on a timeless journey. They started with an animated film business that failed, then started a Hollywood film studio. In 1928, they obtained their first breakthrough when Walt Disney directed the first Mickey Mouse animated film called "Plane Crazy." In 1955, they created Disneyland. In 1966, Walt died, and Roy took over. In 1971 Walt Disney World opened and Roy died. The company took a hit and rebuilt itself as the Walt Disney Company and continues to grow. Currently, Walt Disney Company is the second-largest entertainment and media company in the world (Caft & Quick, 2006, pp. 1407-1412). Part of this success is because Disney’s culture. Organizational Structure

A company’s organizational culture is the system of shared meaning that governs how people behave in an organization. Culture includes shared values, assumptions and beliefs that dictate the day-to-day behaviors of all involved (Robbins & Judge, 2011).

Espoused Values

The Disney workforce has six primary espoused values that create a unified mission for all to believe in and follow. These six values are Innovation, Quality, Community, Storytelling, Optimism, and Decency. Innovation is developing new ideas, products and methods. Quality is striving for a high standard of excellence and maintaining those standards. The community is referring to positive and inclusive ideas about family and community.
