WORLD HUNGER

We often take it for granted that we have access to food and water, and while missing one

meal can lead to headaches or nausea, this nothing compared to the plight that many people

and children face throughout the world.

Hunger, health and malnutrition are powerful but well-known terms. Everyone knows what

they mean, yet they stir up different images for everyone.

“Hunger, like so many global issues is a stark reminder of our unequal and unjust world”

(Doorly 2012:212)

The following essay is aimed at bringing deeper understanding to the above quotation by

analyzing key challenges and causes of hunger in today’s world. It will also answer to the

question to why developing countries have the highest hunger rates.

What are hunger, malnutrition and health and how are they related?

For most people in developed countries, being hungry is an unusual funny feeling given by

missing a meal. However hunger has a completely different meaning if you are one of those

millions who do not get a meal every day. The World Hunger Report (2004) defines hunger as “

a condition in which people do not get enough food to provide the nutrients for active and

healthy lives”.

On the other hand, malnutrition is often referred to as a disease that caused many deaths due

to having an unbalanced food intake. Malnutrition is caused by more than just a lack of dietary

energy. It can occur if the quality of food is insufficient even if there is plenty in terms of

quantity. Malnutrition and its associated disease conditions can be caused by eating too little,

eating too much, or eating an unbalanced diet that lacks necessary nutrients
