SOCY 101 - Assignment #1 – Sociological Imagination

Society reflecting and shaping on an individual can be only of your choice on how you interpret it. People are influenced by society if they interact with it on a daily basis, or you can be an individual who chooses to isolates from it. Some of these actions are caused by the direct interactions, or by the influence of past interactions. Society is very much a trend people may follow and do what they see and some may see but not do it’s your conscious and actions that play a role.

Society has both shaped me into becoming a better individual everyday and being well aware. I would say society does play a part of my family’s insight on what is right and what is wrong for me. Growing up in a West Indian family as a female, as a teenager and as the oldest I was always looked at to have no fun because education is important. It’s said when you have it you’ll get a good job, and you’ll be able to survive, however when you don’t, you are looked at differently. As growing up as a teenager I became a rebel I went against my parents going out, not following their rules I wanted to know why I couldn’t have both why must what others do in society affect me?. Being compared to what was happening in society at that moment affected me both emotionally and mentally. Young women getting pregnant, being a dropout, and not getting a good job scared the hell out of me to acknowledge what they were saying was true. As time went growing up society was and is still changing and so did my parents interpretation of it.

Race and Ethnicity has a very strong influenced towards how I think, what I say and how I act and where I live. Growing up among a society where we had different ethic groups and religions that weren’t where I was from wasn’t hard at all until I got older.
