English 101: An Introduction to Learning the Correct Way to Write an Academic Essay

At the start of my English 101 class, when I wrote my introduction in the first forum, I thought this class would be easy to complete. I realized how wrong I was after handing in my first written assignment, and the disappointment I felt after reading the class mentor's feedback was tremendous. After all, one of the primary responsibilities of my current job is technical writing, and I always receive positive feedback from my audience at work. I had always been very confident in my writing skills until I started this class; I honestly thought I was a very good writer. However, Technical writing is considerably different from academic writing. When writing technical documents, we have a template for everything, and we just fill it in. There are no thesis statements, sentence structure, correct grammar, paragraphs, main ideas, and supporting points to worry about. This class was like starting over for me, but sort of like learning to ride a bike: practice a little, and you are back on the road. The three things I learned that improved my writing the most were formatting, grammar, and structure. I found that these were my most significant weaknesses, and if I did not improve on those, my writing skills would never get better. These are the three areas that my mentor had stressed each week when giving her feedback on my written assignments. So naturally, these should be the focus of my final project.
