CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP

Currently, there are requirements for becoming a Canadian citizen according to citizenship and immigration Canada. These requirements depend on individual situation. For example, an adult permanent resident of Canada applying for his/her self or for his/her minor child who is under the age of 18 years old must meet all these requirements. Holders obtained their citizenship from birth or through naturalization, which includes shared national values together with obligations of paying taxes and obeying the law. Apart from these obligations, each Canadian enjoys the rights, privileges and responsibilities of a Canadian citizenship. In this claim of citizenship, Denise Chong (1953) “Being Canadian” relates the nature of citizenship to how she tells stories about herself and her family used setting, tone, imagery, contrast and descriptive details to define what it means to be a Canadian.

Chong uses setting to establish her historical background throughout her essay. The constant repetition of “Chinatown” relates her background with the Chinese culture and the history of China. This draws the attention of the reader to start thinking where China is located and also the difference between the Chinese and Canadian cultures. This is evident when she confesses to her mother about her feelings while in China: “In a letter to my mother in Prince George, I confessed that, despite the predictions of friends back in Canada, I was finding it difficult to any Chineseness.” (P.15). this mode of her feelings supports her claim of citizenship and helps the reader to understand how valuable the Canadians citizenship is. This is evident when her grandmother sacrifices for her future generation to be Canadians and determination to travel back to Canada to give birth to her mother: “Eight months into her pregnancy, she decided to...
