Sociological Imagination Essay

The topic I have chosen to explore in my essay is the question of, o our parents serve as our main socializing agent, and when given the chance is it wrong to break ties and resocialize yourself. This is important to society because the way that you are socialized at a young age plays a major role in how one contributes to society, and it also effects how they act and function in a given environment. It is my belief that our parents do serve as our main socializing agents. They tell one how to dress, act, eat, and how to present oneself when in a public forum; not in a home and or private setting. I also hold the belief that braking ties with your parents beliefs and customs and forming your own is an integral part of growing not only in age but as person overall. One topic that I will attempt to educate the reader on more extensively is how being socialized a certain way effects your public image, and how one views themselves as their own person.

Socialization has been around for ages, form the times of native aborigines; hunter gatherers, planters, shamans, etc. However, socialization is done to different people in different ways. From personal experience I was brought up to be very proper, respectful, an all-around class-act. For most of my years I didn’t even question these standards, after all they were my standards rite. Until one day I realized these virtues were not one hundred percent my own, my parents had only socialized me into believing they were. The moment this aha moment hit me was on December 18th, 2014. I had finished cleaning my room, doing my laundry, and even washed my dog, all in preparation for the big party that I was dying to attend. When I asked my parents they immediately said no, stating that I didn’t need to be around other kids partying and drinking because I was above that. But was I? The answer is yes I am, but...
