Ever since the early ages, the United States of America has been known to be the land of opportunity. When Hispanic settlers came in the 1900’s it was everything but a land of opportunity. These people had to go through hardships, and fight for what they truly wanted. One of Donato’s main points in the book is how Latino’s were not treated equally as the Anglo American’s in the school system and in the working system as well. The Hispanic’s were always treated differently then the Anglo Americans. In the schooling system, the Latino’s would have the handy down books or they were not even aloud to go to school because of child labor. In the classroom the Hispanic’s were treated like they were not even human. They would have to be in the basement of the school with the worst conditions in order to get an education.

There were people who would try fighting against these conditions; one man being Thomas Maloney. He was a man of integrity who wanted to help the Hispanic children and families in anyway that he could. He had a campaign named “The Mexican Welfare Committee”; this campaign brought awareness of the workers conditions and the child labor laws going on with the Hispanic’s. The things that were noticed was the little shack that they were living in, children not going to school and being forced to go to work (which goes along with child labor) as well as the health of the works and that wages that they would receive. The average Mexican family made was $600 a year, when in reality it was at least $1800 to survive at that time. The children started working before they were 11 years old, which created problems with school and child labor. “The youngest had fainted at the school and had been unable to attend.
