Final Essay

American women in the 1950’s through 1970’s, went through a lot. In the 1950’s, women were married, and stayed at home to be the house wife. They took care of the children if they had any. Women’s rights had come along way, but it still had a long way to go. In the 1960’s women had the same role, but in 1970’s it started to change. Women in 1970’s, started to get stronger and become more independent. Women started to do more on their own. It was also the time that people were trying to stop war and be more peaceful. The women in the 1970’s came along way in women’s rights.

Women during WW II were highly valued. The men were all off to war, so therefore women had to step up and do a man’s job. Women did a great job during this time, but when war was over and the men started to come home, women were expected to go back to being housewives. This seemed like a sever set back on women’s liberation. Women had come so far to just be knocked down. All women in all professions suffered. During WW II, a women’s professional baseball team was formed, then when the men came home, they no longer wanted women to play. Many women excelled in their jobs while the men were at War, but when they came home, women were either asked to leave their jobs, or they were fired. Definitely a setback in women’s rights.

The Civil Rights movement brought on a lot of changes. We see that the school system started to be integrated. African-American’s started to have more rights and were at the starts to be viewed as equal to a white man. Civil Rights movement had a lot of great people that fought for the rights of African-American. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcom X were among some of the great people that fought for the rights of African-Americans. Women during the Civil Rights movement were overlooked. People were more focused on the rights of African-Americans. Women’s rights were set back during this time....
