Module 06 Case Study: Articulations and Nerve Tissue

Part I— “Jill” Questions

1. What is the difference between a tendon and ligament? (1 point) The difference between a tendon and a ligament, is that a tendon attaches a muscle to bone or muscle to muscle, like the biceps tendon attaches the biceps muscle to the humeral bone. A ligament attached bone to bone or bone to cartilage, an example is the ACL, it attaches the anterior side of the tibia to the femur.

2. What bones form the articulation (joint) of the ankle? Did Jill most likely sprain or strain her ankle? Explain your reasoning and the difference between the two? (1 point) The three joints the make up the ankle are: talocrural joint, subtalar joint, and the inferior tibiofibular joint. Jill likely sprained her ankle. Since a strain injury is muscle to tendon, and a sprain is either a full thickness tear of a ligament in a joint, this leads me to believe that Jill sprained her ankle instead of straining it.

3. What are the four major ligaments of the knee along with their individual function in respect to the femur? (1 point) There are four ligaments in the knee: ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL. The anterior cruciate ligament is in the front center of the knee. The ligament is responsible for rotation and forward movement. The posterior cruciate ligament is in the back of the knee in the center and it is responsible for backward movement of the tibia. The medial cruciate ligament is on the medial side of the femoral condyle and attached to the tibia and gives the medial side of the knee stability. The lateral cruciate ligament is the ligament that runs along the outside of the knee and attaches the lateral portion of the femoral condyle to the lateral side of the tibia, it gives the outside of the knee stability.

4. If you were the trainer that initially saw Jill after her fall, describe what her knee probable looked at (Hint-inflammation). Why did the trainers put ice on her knee right...
