Subj: Character Reference Statement

My name is ___ and I am writing to demonstrate the abilities of Lieutenant ___to continue to serve as an officer in the United States Navy.

Character is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Attesting to ___’ character, she is an excellent communicator, always keeps an open mind, and epitomizes the “one team, one fight” mentality. This is exactly why the Sailors working for ___, myself included, have such great respect for her.

I previously served onboard ___for 25 months as ___. ___ and I first met in May ___. She was a newly reporting Department Head and I had been ___ for almost a year. In the next 12 months since then, I would be serving under her as her Division Officer in this arduous sea duty assignment. Consequently, I had the opportunity to get to know ___very closely. ___has dedicated her life to the Navy and embodies her role as a Supply Corps Officer. She places her job and the Navy first in her life, and would not have it any other way.

I knew ___for 12 months in my capacity as her Division Officer, and I can say without a doubt that I was proud to serve alongside her. I cannot thank her enough for always being there for me as a great friend and mentor. Whenever confronted with a difficult situation or scenario at work, I knew I could always count on her for advice. We were a united front.

Specifically, for example, I had discovered some petty theft of soda to be occurring in the ___ Division . Other khaki supervisors wanted to handle things quickly with internal counseling instead of following procedural compliance. That way, the department would not be cast in a bad light by the senior chain of command. Nevertheless, ___ kept a questioning attitude and gathered all the facts for compilation into a formal case.
