Summary

The article I chose to evaluate is based on research that was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). The study found that CMMS can be used in aviation maintenance to identify trends and highlight items that are to be brought on alert as a maintenance issue. This software, when used properly can even compute the required mathematics in statistics to set alert parameters to the usual 2-3 standard deviations above the mean for any ATA coded maintenance task. This study found that although the software is capable, the major disconnect is with the maintenance crews, lack of training, and sub-par computer familiarization to the software to make it more useful. (Tretten & Karim, 2014)

Problem

As stated in the summary the main cause of problems within CMMS is its lack of proper data entry by the line maintainers(Tretten & Karim, 2014). The software can be written and tailored to accommodate any size fleet of aircraft, any type of aircraft, and even cater to requirements to fly under any part of the Title 14 Code of federal regulations (CFR) which regulates aviation. This problem can be attributed to a workforce without proper training or CMMS familiarization, or a lack of computer skills in general. This can be caused by a major component of aircraft maintainers being hands on, and an older workforce less accustomed to computer based work.

Significance

The findings of this study are interesting in that this system could be, and is successful in some parts of aviation. This system like most computer integration, can cut time and manpower by doing calculations and identifying trends more easily than a person or team of people could with the same amount of time. This is the future of aviation, and companies should realize that this will save money long term, but it requires paying for training in the short term to accommodate the transition.
