The Effects of Technology on the Accounting Profession
In the early 80’s, a new product was introduced to the world. It promised to be faster in the way our lives would change. Computers have now grown to be a product that is used in homes and in every business around the globe. Before this device was introduced, hours were spent on taking information down on paper. We saw cabinets full of different important documents and in the accounting profession, every document was done by hand and accountants would calculate financial expense using such methods as writing problems out, using calculators, etc. As technology started to change, programs needed to placed to keep track of a company’s business. The Accounting Information System or AIS, computes all the necessary data that is available. There are also other professions that accountants may want to explore. The following discussion will introduce you to such Accounting Information Systems and the way it has changed the way accounting works.
A few decades ago, accounting information such as, make shift ledgers of credits and debits, could be found in shoe boxes. In today’s technology, we are now able to find this information in data files of an AIS. Such users like bankers, investors, and company management, along with accountants, and government financial agencies are able to collect the data. “For accountants, new technology is always trying to figure a more efficient way to do the same simple process of input, process and output...
