The Effects of Technology o the Accounting Profession

With the development in technology organizations have seen many changes over the years. With the ability to obtain accounting information systems customized to an organizations specific needs accounting information systems has had a major impact on larger organizations. With the advancement in accounting information systems has also required a change in the skills that individuals must have to survive in today’s organizations. “Most accounting employers expect new hires to possess a minimum level of computer proficiency” (Bagranoff, Simkin, & Norman, 2008).

Information systems have opened up a new way of conducting business. With the data stored in one place it is easier than ever to get the information that is needed to complete any task. One of the most beneficial changes in today’s organization is the ability to work from anywhere as long as an internet connection is available. The organization that I work for uses a program called Cisco Systems VPN Client. The VPN Client allows employees to connect to the organizations information systems through an encrypted vpn tunnel for secure remote connection for employees who are mobile.

The effect that information systems have had on the accounting process is a positive. Information systems have made it possible for organizations to eliminate the duplication of work. Not too long ago in our organization employees were filling out timecards by hand. The time cards were approved by supervisors with their signature. Next the payroll clerk enters the employee’s time into our payroll program PeopleSoft. In today’s world employees enter their time directly into PeopleSoft. The supervisors approve their time within PeopleSoft. This has saved time and eliminated the data entry step for the payroll clerk. The payroll clerk can now focus on the accuracy of...
