DRUGS: THE INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY

1. Drug Misuse - is defined as the use of a substance for a purpose not consistent with legal or medical guidelines

2. Ephedrine - is used for temporary relief of shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing due to bronchial asthma. Ephedrine is a decongestant and bronchodilator. It works by reducing swelling and constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages and widening the lung airways, allowing you to breathe more easily.

3. Drug Abuse - the habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs.

4. Drug Dependence - is an adaptive state that develops from repeated drug administration, and which results in withdrawal upon cessation of drug use.

5. Physical Dependence - is a physiological state of adaptation to a substance, the absence of which produces symptoms and signs of withdrawal. It is possible to be physically dependent on a drug without being addicted to it. Physical dependence is the result of physical changes in the brain.

6. Tolerance - is a person's diminished response to a drug, which occurs when the drug is used repeatedly and the body adapts to the continued presence of the drug. Resistance refers to the ability of microorganisms or cancer cells to withstand the effects of a drug usually effective against them.
