College Comp I Unit 7 Discussion Board

Professor and class,

The topic of my paper is "Addiction:  Treatment and Recovery" and is based on contemporary research findings which, in essence, redefines our understanding of the concept of addiction as a science, and ultimately further influence unprecedented treatment methods as a science.

The specific paragraphs I would like to expand upon with more in-depth sources are:

"First of all, research shows that the combination of medication and behavioral therapy is the most successful approach.  Beyond that, it is imperative to tailor a treatment plan based on individual drug use habits and medical, psychiatric, social, and environmental issues.

Medication is used to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, help the brain adjust to the absence of drugs, and help ensure the prevention of relapse be eliminating triggers based on chemical imbalances.

Furthermore, because drug use is so utterly disruptive to normal life and, thus, effect every aspect of a person’s life, treatment must meet the needs of the individual as a whole."

Many of the latest concepts of addiction simply do not sit well with the general population because it might seem like excuses being made for people to choose to use drugs.  I think it is because of these misconceptions that what are proven scientific facts are widely rejected.  However, the fact of the matter is that the more we learn about the true nature of addiction with an open mind the more the likelihood of subscribing to more comprehensive treatment plans born from science rather than out-dated concepts directly or indirectly relative to a "stronger self-resolve" despite compelling evidence that addiction is more complicated than that.  For example...
