Food Facts discussion 1

1. Read the food and agricultural factors that affect nutrition and health. Discuss two ways that you could positively impact the environment related to food production.

1. Two ways that you could positively impact the environment related to food production are by purchasing locally grown food and growing your own, as well as buying food in bulk. By purchasing locally grown food pollution, refrigeration, and packaging is greatly reduced due to less distance traveled in order for it to reach your table; this is also known as food miles. Pollution affects the environment substantially due to the fact that it is the main cause for global warming. Locally grown food also helps maintain the farmland in the area. Buying food in bulk saves in a large amount of packaging. This is because the food you purchase will not be individually packaged and it limits waste.

2. Read through the other postings from students and comment on one students remarks.

Hi Allison,

I agree with both of your ideas. Buying locally organically grown products are huge way that you positively help the environment. Purchasing locally grown food does not only support our local farmers but it also helps maintain the land in the area. By growing produce organically it helps purify our water and rid the environment of toxins that are not only bad for us but animals as well. Secondly, reusable bottles in an easy way to save money and help eliminate waste form our landfills. That is something I have done for years and if everyone else did it, it would have a substantial positive impact on our environment.
