Personal Response to The Book Thief

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak is a story of Liesel Meminger, a young girl, and her life in Molcing, Germany during World War II. At the beginning of the book I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it because the voice of Death as a narrator was odd, but as I continued I began to enjoy it. This is the type of book where even though you know how the war ends, you hope that people can be saved and everything can turn out good. I liked how every character in the story is a hero in his or her own way. For example, Rudy gives his own bread to a Jewish prisoner who is on his way to Dachau. He knows how much trouble he can get in and the punishments he can receive but he decides to do it anyway because he knows that the Jewish people are on the way to their deaths. The heroes in this book are people who have nothing but still manage to help others. I also found that words are very important in this story. The words that the characters use in the story either hurt and destroy people or comfort them. All in all I thought that The Book Thief is a great story that can teach people that everyone can be a hero in their own way and how important words are and the impact they can make on others.
