1The tragedy of the Karen:
Karen Tribal people of Burma; never fully accepted into Burmese kingdom
When British colonized Burma, 30% Karen converted to Christianity giving Karen people
colonial government positions.
Burmans resented the favoritism so after British left, conflicts between the Karen and
Burmans arose.
Karen’s rebelled establishing their own state and smuggled in goods between Thailand
and Burma also by mining gemstones in their region
1990’s Burmese army had overrun the Karen with the help of Thailand assisting them to
prevent sanctuary to Karen soldiers.
The Deforestation of SE Asia:
Globalization has effect SE Asia landscape/ environment; Log exporting has caused a
loss in trees far exceeding the loss from indigenous peoples or colonizers.
Japan first country globalizing in world forestry in 1960’s but other Asian countries
developed their own wood products firms. Taiwan, S. Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia
Most SE Asian countries widely publicize bans on the export of raw logs, while Thailand
bans logging altogether.
Malaysia is a leader exporter in tropical hardwoods; 60% of the logs go to Japan but the
environment of Malaysia will be completely deforested in the coming future.
Thailand once cutted trees, more than 50% between 60’s 80’s. Since 1995 logging has
been illegal due to severe damage.
Indonesia has ⅔ of region’s forested region about 10% thats world’s true tropical rain
forest that’s been lost to logging.
Population and Settlement:
Swidden in uplands: Small plots of hand cut land and planted indigenous plants used
until plant fertility drops and land reverts to woody vegetation eventually turning to original form
When swidden isn’t possible any longer, practitioners turn to cash crops like opium.
Like the mts. of Burma where opium is grown and known as the Golden Triangle.
