Emotional Intelligence

According to P. Salovey and J.D. Mayer the definition of Emotional Intelligence is “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action” it has to be noted that Emotional Intelligence differs from “Common Intelligence” which is measured as the intelligence quotient IQ. Emotional Intelligence is the ability of an individual to be able to interact with others and develop successful interpersonal relationships with friends, family and peers at the workplace. Emotional Intelligence is developed and tested in working environments specially when teams are formed to complete specifics tasks, for example when a person is tasked to accomplish a project and is given the leadership position. A person taking the lead not only needs the technical abilities to complete such project, he will relay in his Emotional Intelligence skills to manage and direct the rest of the group, the person will be successful only if he is able to direct manage and understand others needs and capabilities. It is imperative for all managers to develop and recognize that Emotional Intelligence is an essential element to succeed in the business world and in all managerial practice. A personal example could be when a student was assigned to complete a class presentation, the intelligence applied by all members of the team to interact with each other recognizing the needs and capabilities of each team member to get the job done in an organized, efficient and timely manner would be an excellent example of the application of Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to monitor ones’ own and others emotions. Characteristics include self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, and relationship-management.
