Assignment 1 DOCUMENT REPLICATION AND CRITIQUE

It is difficult to say whether a design or a piece of art is good or bad. However, understanding and applying the four basic design principles is truly useful to create a nice design. These principles also help me to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of a flyer and re-design it.

The original flyer is about a launch party for the JapanLA for Hello Kitty clothing collection. The flyer does a great job of demonstrating the theme of the event by emphasizing the loveliness and feminineness of the character “Kitty White”. The big image of Kitty White on the right side is the highlight of the flyer. Honestly, how can people pass by without noticing this lovable “lady”? The combination between pink and black also creates a contrast as well as catches everyone’s eyes. What is more interesting is that the polka dots on Kitty’s dress were repeated again on the background, which helps to maintain the consistency and strengthen the theme of cuteness. However, the big image of Kitty and too much text on the paper sometimes make readers feel distracted and overwhelmed. Moreover, the text is centered, which is kind of boring. To make the flyer looks more interesting and to challenge myself, I did try to make some differences on the flyer.

For a start, to make a more impressive look, I changed the background color to black with white polka dots. Black is such an appealing color if we know how to deal with it. To go well with the black and white background, I used red together with dark blue for the text. These two colors definitely contrast with black, which causes strong visual effect and catch everyone’s eyes. This is really important because we only have no more than one second to gain people’s notice within a bunch other colorful flyers.
