BTM 407: SPORTS TOURISM

Course Purpose

This course is intended to equip learners with knowledge and skills in sport tourism so as to build competencies which can spur the growth of the emerging field of sports tourism.

Course Objectives

By the end of course, the learners should be able to:

i. Demonstrate an understanding of the factors influencing the growth of domestic tourism

ii. Critique the interests in domestic Tourism

iii. Identify and manage the impacts of domestic tourism

iv. Formulate appropriate marketing strategy for domestic tourism

v. Organize a sport activity within the university premises

Course Content

Sport tourism: evolution and development, classification of sports; conceptualizing sport as a tourism product; sports tourism markets: demand for sport tourism, active sports market, events sports market; marketing paces through sports; factors influencing sports tourism development; democratization of sports and sportification of society; the role of sports organizations in the development of sports tourism: FIFA, Athletics Kenya, Sport Stadia Management Board etc; events sports tourism: Olympics, World cup, World cross country championship, Safaricom marathon, Tecla Lorupe peace race etc; impact of sports tourism: economic, socio-cultural and environment; constraints of sports tourism development; policy issues in sports tourism development; emerging issues, case studies; the future trends of sports tourism in Kenya; learners to organize a sporting activity.
