Zika Virus

My overall topic of interest is the Zika virus. I am researching in the area of Social Sciences , wanting to know more about the education related difficulties Zika affected children around the world face. My main concern is the challenges young children take on while growing up with the Zika virus. This virus was first described in the 1940’s. “The Zika is an arthropod-borne virus of the family Flaviviridae and genus Flavivirus, also referred to as the West Nile virus (WNV), dengue virus (DENV) or chikungunya virus (CHIKV).” (Musso) “This virus has remained limited for several years. It started in the equatorial regions of Asia and Africa. As much as we would like the virus to completely go away, it is not possible. It is impossible to exterminate all of the infected mosquitos around the world. This virus causes children to be born with abnormally small heads. My research question is “What challenges do children affected by the Zika virus face throughout their daily lives?”

“We decided to investigate the use of saliva as an alternative sample for acute phase Zika detection.” (Roche) The saliva testing method was used. Blood sample methods had been used on the past several years but they were giving off false results. “on October 2013 to March 2014, 1,064 samples from 885 patients presenting with Zika fever symptoms foe ZIKV RNA detection: 748 blood samples, 319 saliva samples and 182 same time samples” (Cao-Lormeau) “Blood samples were collected from venous blood puncture and saliva samples with dry cotton swabs without transport media.” (Cao-Lormeau) This is when the researchers found out that the saliva samples were more useful and accurate. “Results showed that the ZIKV RNA was more frequently detected in saliva than in blood samples.” (Robin) “Oral swab is a non invasive sample-collection device of particular interest when blood samples are difficult to collect in remote places where medical facilities are lacking, in community settings for...
