Self-esteem is the way you recognize your self-worth and values, or the way you feel about yourself, to be simple. It sounds unnecessary to talk about at first, who would feel down about themselves? However, that really happens in some people. It is very important to enhance one’s self-esteem. Having high self-esteem, one will own a very positive way of thinking, thereby communicate and work better. It is difficult for people with low self-esteem to be confident enough to be successful in communication and working.

Being a non-native English speaker, I acknowledge the importance of having a high self-esteem. I understand how low self-esteem limits my development. After learning about self-esteem in this Speech class, I got that I need to change in both my way of thinking and behaviors.

First, I need to be careful on what my mind is processing. Positive self-talk plays an important role. I used to always feel terrible and so worried about whatever I do, that I am not good and I am going to ruin everything. That thought never helped me, but just took my confidence away. Now I know that nothing is going to be perfect, it is best to effort in doing anything. What I have done is from my effort for that time, anything later than that will be different. It is unnecessary to judge my own ability through single mistakes I made. Besides that, people also tend to compare themselves to others, so do I. I sometimes feel down because some of my friends have special talents but I have none. Everybody all has something that they are good at. So I find it wrong to say I don’t have any talent, but I have not practiced enough to own a talent. I will stop comparing myself to others because that is helpless.

In order to improve my self-esteem, I also need to change some of my habits too. I will choose do things that can help me feel better about myself. I can choose helping people and doing volunteer work, or do things that I’m good at so that I can build up my...
